Phonics Readers for Guided Reading
The word study portion of a guided reading lesson should be quick and easy – a jumpstart to your lesson. But sometimes this can feel rushed and only touches on the surface of what my students need the most. There are also instances where I want to spend more time on word study, and other times when I want to spend the entire lesson working on phonics because I know my students really need it. I often use a quick assessment to determine who needs a more focused session. I call it a Phonics Strategy Group and this is when I pull a group of students that need more help in one specific area such as the CVCE rule. While I could use sound boxes or flash/picture cards, I really want my young learners to be reading sentences and using comprehension skills while practicing phonics. Making Inferences: How To Tips
When you begin to teach your young learners to infer, you may find it helpful to have a few tips and tricks from someone who has a lot of experience in this area. I love teaching this difficult skill, mainly because I've developed strategies that really work! I hope you find these tips helpful for both you and your students ~ let's get inferring! Inferring - A Difficult Skill Do you have trouble teaching your first, second or even third graders to infer? It is a difficult skill to teach and one of the hardest things is finding material to help teach it. Practice Making Inferences Using Text from Books There are plenty of great books with inferences scattered throughout but that's what makes it challenging to specifically target the skill, since you may find only a few in children's picture books. Ideally, when students learn to infer, the implications in the text will naturally turn into inferences that makes the text make more sense and even develop a love of reading. 100th Day of School Fun!
A fellow teaching friend told me about this fun thing she does to celebrate the 100th Day of School with her students and I thought it was so great that I wanted to share it with you! She takes photos of all the kids and then uses an aging app to make them look 100 years old. Then she surprises them with a copy of the picture on the 100th day. I loved the idea so much that I did it too and made a fun little photo cover to put their pictures in. Teachers need each other so much. Thank you Vanessa – you always have awesome ideas! My First Special Education Class
Has anyone else been worried when you found out you had been given a special education class? I certainly was and I'd love to share with you my story of how I what I learned and how I overcame my feelings of self-doubt and worry in my first year as a special education teacher. My Story: Last year at Meet the Teacher, a little boy and his parents entered my room. I immediately noticed something about the little boy. He was making noises, touching and smelling everything. I began to wonder if he was a special needs child because he reminded me of my best friend's child. I had seen these behaviors in him many times. The little boy's mother proceeded to ask me if he would be receiving his therapy this year in his new school. "Yes," I replied, "if he was receiving therapy at another school, he will also receive it here at our school". Curious to find out if there was anything besides his speech, I asked if he had any other disabilities, and she replied with, "No, just autism." I guess she thought I had been told about this, but I hadn't, and in my mind, I was scared and filled with thoughts of doubt and insecurities. Would I be able to do this child justice?
