What are “Complete and Earn” Paper Craft Activities for 1st Grade Math & Literacy?

“Complete and Earn” Activities are an assigned set of activities in which children complete a task and earn a piece of a paper craft.  For instance, if it’s a Fall Math Complete and Earn project, students might be completing an addition worksheet and earning the scarecrow’s hat when complete.  If there are 8 pieces of the scarecrow, there will be 8 engaging assignments to be completed.

Additionally, these assignments should be skills that have been covered and need to be practiced.   Once all of the activities are complete, the child can then cut out the pieces and put the scarecrow together.  I like for my students to color the piece as soon as they’ve completed the assignment.  (and had it checked over by a teacher or peer) Then, at the end, all they must do is cut it out and put it together.  Another reason to do it this way is so that kids don’t lose the parts to their craft!

Why use “Complete and Earn” Paper Craft Activities?

So… My number one reason for using this type of activity was that I needed to keep my students busy for a time.  But… motivation plays a big role.  If kids are motivated to complete their assignments, they’ll also be willing to stay busy for longer periods doing the work.  Motivation + Fun Busy Work = Quiet Kids

How to Use “‘Complete and Earn” Paper Craft Activities for 1st Grade Math & Literacy

“Complete and Earn” Paper Crafts are easy to prepare and should need little guidance for completion.  The assignments come in the form of a booklet with a front and back cover that can be colored as a cumulating activity.  More Motivation!  One of the first pages will be a list of assignments with the coordinating part to be colored. All assignments and parts of the craft are kept neatly in the booklet.  They can be picked up daily by the teacher to assure they will be ready to return to work the following day. Lost books would be a disaster!

“Complete and Earn” with a Twist

Instead of a craft, students can collect items after a finishing an assignment.  For example, in this Beach Day Activity, students will collect beach gear after completing each worksheet.  When they’ve completed all of the assignment, they will have filled their entire tracking sheet.  At this point, the teacher may give a special prize for doing this or let the filled tracking sheet be the prize.

Here’s what to do:  “Complete and Earn” Paper Craft Activities for 1st Grade Math & Literacy

  1. Make one booklet for each student and a copy of the answer keys.
  2. Pass out the booklets (or leave for a sub)
  3. Discuss the directions and tell students the order in which you want them to complete the assignments.  They are numbered but they don’t need to go in order.
  4. Explain if you wish that the work must be mostly correct.  This can be accomplished by having students work together or have the adult in charge look over the page before granting permission to color the craft part.

The worksheets that come with each “Complete and Earn” project are on level for most students.  There are a variety of skills in each for math and for literacy.  The directions are easy for children to follow which helps students feel the confidence to complete the entire packet.   These will make great morning work, learning centers, extra practice and a nice sub packet. All answer keys are included.
