Social Studies First Grade – The Dog Poop Initiative Read Aloud & FREE Activity Pages

The Dog Poop Initiative is a great read aloud to get kids thinking about leadership skills in a hilarious way!

The Dog Poop Initiative

A true story of SCOOPERS and POOPERS, of pointers and heroes.  Of those who score real goals, and those who score zeroes.

Summary

This book is inspired by a true story when the author was acting as an assistant coach to his 5-year-old son’s soccer team. When they show up to the field, there is a pile of dog poop in the playing area… it has been there through two other teams playing on the field. Finally, someone with INITIATIVE shows up and instead of avoiding the poop, they clean it up.

How to use this book in your classroom

A fantastic way to start the year off by establishing routines from the beginning. This book proves to be a great tool for teaching leadership in the primary grades, with activities that are best suited for students in grades one through three (however this book has also been used to address leadership in high schools students as well). Teachers can also use the lesson to help address other challenges at school such as “The Tattling Initiative” “The Kindness Initiative” etc. School counsellors will also find these activities useful for their lessons on leadership.

Free Activity Pages Included

Starting with the definition of Initiative, several free activity pages are also included. As stated above, these pages are geared toward elementary students.
